SWINE FLU – Russia not prepared but not worried 15 July 2009
Whilst global headlines continue to be dominated by news of Swine Flu, there is some anecdotal evidence that discussion amongst individuals may be tapering off. In this context the research holding Romir together with its partners from WIN* network in 19 other countries asked about concerns of individuals about Swine Flu and their perception of preparedness of governments to deal with mass outbreaks in each country.
Over all we observe a lack of concern about Swine Flu across the countries studied, and particularly in Europe. Just 28% of respondents said they were quite or very concerned. In just two countries, China and Bolivia, there were more than half of respondents quite or very concerned by the spreading pandemic...

Romir continues to monitor the purchasing behavior of the inhabitants of large Russian cities. The number of Russians who eat after the crisis with sweets is growing and so are the sales of the confectionary. However, according to the results of the SCIF panel research conducted by Romir holding, the trend shows itself in a different light for different types of sweets.
Romir’s analysts noted that the increase is most noticeable when it comes to the cheaper segments of the confectionery market, such as for example the segment of cooled sponge cakes. In February 2009 the share of the families (in the cities of 0.5 million and plus) buying these products has grown by 6.7% vs. 5.8% recorded in February 2008 (a 15% growth y-o-y). In March there was already 21% more of them (7.1%) than the last year, and in non-festive April the rise hit almost 30% (8.4% of all the families against 6.6% in April 2008).

Two-thirds of the Russians (66%) are ready to take loans at a bank when in acute need of it, a little less than a quarter of the respondents (23%) will not consider such a way of obtaining the amount needed even if emergency arises, and 11% of citizens couldn’t find a definite position and preferred not to answer...

During the last week, 18th to 24th May 2009, all types of cities decreased their expenses on everyday home consumption. The leaders in cutting back where the families in the cities with less than 1 million inhabitants, who's expenses fell down by 12.9%. Their level of expenses is in full accordance with the two-week salary fluctuation cycle. It is interesting to note that the difference between cities of various types is gradually waning: their inhabitants show certain simultaneity in spending more or less money.
On the whole, in the week of May 18-24, 2009 SCIF index ‘household consumption of the average town dweller’ (an index of everyday consumption of consumer goods) made up 92.4% (-7.6%) as compared to the last week (May 11-17, 2009) and 118.3% (+18.3%) vs. the analogous week in 2008 (May 19-25, 2008)…

In the week of May 4-10, 2009 SCIF index ‘household consumption of the average town dweller’ made up 94,4% (-5,6%) as compared to the last week (April 27 – May 3, 2009) and 110,2% (+10,2%) vs. the analogous week in 2008. By all appearances, a certain revival of economy, the looming summer and positive mass-media forecasts boosted the optimism of Russians, living in large cities, as of their future plans and their readiness to spend money without looking far ahead...
